REMIS System for oil and gas

Remis System FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is Remis System, and what does it do?

Remis System serves as a centralized database for storing and tracking all air quality emission points, equipment specifications, test results, analytical data, operating data, emissions, and compliance-related information.  Air emissions are calculated by Remis based on user selections and emissions factors, test data, or other equations.  Remis System tracks permit and compliance data.  A Report Navigator allows the user to generate a variety of reports for source data verification, emission estimates, permit & compliance summaries, and more.  Remis System comes fully loaded with hundreds of emission factors common to oil and gas source types such as I.C. engines and heaters, as well as a full chemical constituent database with chemical and physical properties covering the most common criteria pollutants, HAPs, and toxic chemicals encountered in oil and gas operations.

What is involved in the installation of Remis System?

If you have selected Package A under our lease pricing options, then RFS personnel will place and test a leased stand-alone system (hardware and software) at your location, in coordination with your company’s IT department as needed.  The system will need to be accessible via the LAN (local area network) for availability to end users.  Under Package B, RFS will coordinate with your company’s IT department or personnel and install the Remis System software on your specified network server for availability to all end users through your company’s LAN.  Alternatively, Remis System may be installed on any single local PC if only one station is required.

In either case, RFS does require that remote access to this system be available continually so that updates and other system maintenance tasks and troubleshooting can be performed.  Finally, under the Package C option, Remis System will be installed for the licensee on an RFS Citrix server in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The system will be configured by RFS (in coordination with licensee’s IT department as required) to allow for remote access from the licensee’s offices directly into the Citrix server.  RFS is responsible for data backup under Package C, while the licensee holds this responsibility under either Package A or Package B.

How is Remis System initialized?

Remis System does not require a long and costly implementation process!  An end-user begins the initialization process by entering facility and equipment information.  Emission factors not already included in Remis as base factors can then be added using the Emission Factor QuickAdd feature.  Next, operating data is entered for the facility and sources being addressed.  This may include annual operating hours, glycol dehy throughputs, tank throughputs, and other operating parameters.  For some emission sources, the user may also want to enter gas analyses or portable testing data.  The user has the option of selecting a permit limit, test data, or emission factors for each source separately for emission calculations.  The Facility Emissions Calculator can then be run to view emission estimates, or to identify any holes or omissions in the initial data entry process.  Reports may be run, viewed, and/or printed through the Report Navigator.  Facility or source permit and compliance information may also be entered for compliance tracking purposes.

What air emission source types are addressed in Remis System?

Remis System handles all emission source types common to the oil and gas industry with the exception of certain types of refinery process units.  Sources specifically addressed include the following:

  • Combustion units (engines, turbines, heaters, boilers, flare pilots)
  • Control devices (i.e., catalytic converters, thermal oxidation units, etc.)
  • Flares and vents
  • Flashing losses (storage tanks)
  • Fugitive equipment leaks (i.e. valves, flanges, pump seals, etc.)
  • Loading operations (truck, rail, etc.)
  • Pigging (gas pipeline clean-out)
  • Process units (amine units, glycol dehydration units)
  • Storage tanks (VOC)

Does Remis System come with any pre-populated reference data such as chemical properties or emission factors?

Yes!  With Remis System, you have instant access to data on over 500 chemical constituents including those criteria pollutants, HAPs, and toxic chemicals most normally encountered in the oil and gas industry.  The base constituent list gives you CAS #, chemical and physical properties, and can be accessed through drop-down list for easy data entry of gas analyses or product/material compositions.  The QuickAdd feature is available for faster data entry, whereby a set of chemical constituents from an existing product/material can be copied and used to create a new compositional listing.  This feature saves many hours of data entry if, for instance, a user has an extensive set of condensate or gas analyses to enter.

Emission factors from AP-42 as well as manufacturers are also included in Remis System for many different I.C. engine types, turbines, and heaters/boilers.  New emission factors may be added for any source type using the Emission Factor QuickAdd feature, which allows you to create a new emission factor set for all pollutants emitted based on an existing factor set.

How much training is involved on Remis System?  How big is the learning curve?

Within just 5 minutes, you can be up and running. But to harness the full power of Remis, a two-day training session taught by RFS personnel is included with the installation of Remis System.  This is normally more than adequate for a user to master the basics of data entry, viewing/editing data, running queries & reports, performing emission calculations, and importing/exporting data.  Training covers Remis System navigation, a guided tour through the menu and all options, data entry of a sample facility including all data required to demonstrate the emission calculations based on a variety of methods available, how to run emission estimates and reports, how to add and edit emission factors, test data, chemical constituent data, and other reference information, and data import/export procedures.

RFS is always available to offer technical support on any issues or questions a user may encounter during the term of the lease.  If you would like to gain a better sense of what it is like to use Remis System, we recommend taking a virtual tour – just click on the ‘Demos’ link.

How can Remis System help me?

  • Remis System will save you time.
  • Remis System will save you money.
  • Remis System will reduce your risk of non-compliance.

If your company does not yet manage all air quality-related permitting, compliance, and reporting data under a centralized information management system, hours of unproductive time are most likely wasted on searching for past-used information or supporting documentation.  The wheel is re-invented many times when running calculations such as mole to weight percent conversions, or actual & potential emissions.  Without an information management system such as Remis System, consistency in the smaller as well as bigger details is very difficult to adopt throughout an environmental department, such as which horsepower rating to use (site, design, or maximum) in emissions inventory or compliance reporting.

Remis System will dramatically improve your company’s efficiency by helping you to maintain a centralized, organized location in which to house all relevant information, reducing time needed to prepare emission inventories or compliance reports.  Once a baseline year is established for facility emissions, the level of effort required for subsequent years is significantly reduced.  Remis System puts data at your fingertips which has already been subjected to rigorous quality control checks, and therefore allows other external tasks such as permit application preparation to be performed efficiently with a high level of confidence in the data being used.

Costs can be incurred by the inefficient use of staff time, and consequently a higher rate of outsourcing to consultants in some cases.  By keeping your information organized and letting Remis System do the work of processing, calculating, and outputting the data and results you need, this revolutionary turn-key solution will pay for itself!

Other costs which cut into corporate profits are those related to non-compliance penalties and all of the ramifications that go along with it.  The risk of environmental non-compliance can be greatly minimized through a centralized information management approach, with solid data integrity which you can rely on with Remis System.  Having calculations performed in the same manner repeatedly and in a quality-controlled, trusted system likewise will help you move further toward your goal of total compliance.

Is Remis System affordable?  How much does it cost?

Remis System is available through very affordable monthly or annual license leasing plans!  Monthly lease options start at less than $500 per month for up to 10 facilities.  Pricing is based on the number of operating facilities (compressor stations, gas plants, etc.) to be managed within Remis System.  A long-term contract is not required, however bigger discounts are offered on one-year and two-year agreements.

How much do you spend each year on annual emission inventories alone?  While some facilities may be exempt depending on state regulations, many companies have some degree of obligation in filing emission inventory reports every year.  This cost can add up even if handled internally.  Compare staff salary and benefits for the number of months employees are dedicated to this reporting task, as well as other reporting tasks such as compliance certifications, semi-annual monitoring reports, and other permit-driven requirements.  You may be surprised at the actual cost involved.  Once these emission inventory, compliance, and monitoring reports are set up within Remis System, minimal time is needed to generate these same reports for subsequent periods or years.
